If there’s one thing any traveler should know before they take off on an adventure or vacation, it’s how to be a respectful tourist. I grew up in Cape May, a small beach town in South Jersey, and I really can’t tell you how many times I was tempted to run over a rude shoobie (Cape May lingo for tourist).

Not that I would ever actually do it, but people don’t realize that they’re visiting a place that others call home. They run blindly across the street in front of cars, run waitresses around like we’re some kind of personal servant who doesn’t have another three tables to take care of, and have apparently forgotten that there is a world that continues to exist outside the bubble of their own personal needs. So, where exactly is my angry rant about the tourists in Cape May taking us (other than you thinking that I’m a grumpy old hag taking my anger out on my keyboard)?

What I’m trying to get at here is that we, as visitors, need to be more aware of our surroundings. Even though you don’t necessarily want to have to worry about anything while on vacation, it’s still important to be mindful and polite. If there’s a long wait at a restaurant, they can’t help it. The place is busy! Be patient. If you notice that the atmosphere around you in quiet and calm, there’s no need to raise your voice to be the loudest one in the room. As a traveler, you are an ambassador of America. You represent us! Don’t give a bad rep.

Depending on where you’re going, do your research on what to wear. General etiquette and behavior is always good to know about. Some countries are much more conservative than others. As a female, you certainly don’t want to be attracting that kind of attention to yourself. Not only will you feel very uncomfortable, but it can also be insulting to the culture of those who live in the area.

Overall, just be mindful of others around you. Have fun exploring the world while also being respectful.
